Jesenice

The industrial town of Jesenice can be seen from the road to the Karavanke tunnel, tucked between steep mountain slopes, and many have found it to be a town full of surprises and well worth visiting – largely due to the legacy of the iron and mining industries. The urban industrial scenes make an astonishing contrast to the mountains in full bloom above the town, and sports fans also love it because of the excellent hockey games played here. You can visit Stara Sava, a protected industrial area of the former ironworks settlement, and also learn about the history of the mining and iron-making industries at the Upper Sava Valley Museum Jesenice. After that you can head off to the virgin-white slopes of Golica with its fields of wild white daffodils. Na Golici is the most frequently broadcast folk melody, and was inspired by this very place.

Jezersko

“Far yonder to the north of Ljubljana, where the skyscraper-sized summits of the Kamnik Alps separate the sunlit Carniola from the mountainous Carinthia, there lies a small area of land, entirely independent and embedded in a ring of high mountains – Jezersko.”
(R.Andrejka, I. Muri, Knjižica Jezersko, Ljubljana 1921)

Jezersko is a picturesque valley, walled on the east by the high sixty-million-year-old summits of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, and on the west by a coral reef over three hundred million years old; this is the place where in the new Europe the abolished northern border with Austria no longer separates the Slovenes from both sides of the mountains; the valley which continues through the longest Slovenian village, Kokra, into the heart of Slovenia – the green pearl of Europe, so rich and diverse in both nature and culture. The valley was shaped by a vast glacier which disappeared ten thousand years ago, and flooded by the waters of the melting ice forming a big lake, from which it got its original name “Pr Jezer” (At the lake). The name was later modernised into today’s “Jezersko”.

A pleasant climate, unspoilt nature and outdoor activities are something Jezersko can guarantee to anyone who comes to visit. In summer and winter you can make shorter or longer hiking trips in the surrounding hills and mountains. If you are thinking of some shorter paths in the valley, we recommend you walk around the lake, visit the old church of St. Oswald (Sv. Ožbolt) or walk up to the mineral water spring and Ank´s waterfall a few minutes away from it.
